When Should You Use Anti-Aging Products?

It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when to start incorporating anti-aging products into your routine, but most experts agree on one thing: you should at least get the basics into your anti-aging routine started in your 20s.

“By your mid-20s, your rate of cell turnover and collagen production starts to decline,” says cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Michele Green. “To see the best results, I recommend starting as early as your early 20s.” However, all experts advise to start using sunscreen as soon as possible if you’re not using it already.

Board-certified nurse and esthetician Genevieve Vielbig, R.N., B.S.N., C.A.N.S., also notes that your skin type can play into when you should start using anti-aging products. “In individuals with dry skin, a daily moisturizer, serum, and eye cream should be started in the early 20s,” says Vielbig. “If the individual has oily skin, traditional anti-aging products can start in their 30s, but most likely they will be using a retinol product to combat acne breakouts, so they are already using preventative measures.”

But one thing is clear: You’re going to want to get a jump-start on your anti-aging skincare routine sooner rather than later. “Protect and repair early — this is one of the best things I tell my younger patients,” says Dr. Marie Hayag, New York City board-certified cosmetic dermatologist. “It will make a big difference later in life.”

Doesn’t matter that buy online or offline. These important things need to mention

Pick a single product. Using multiple anti-aging products, such as wrinkle creams, can actually work against you. Multiple products can irritate your skin, which does not help you with aging. Stick to one main product directly aimed at anti-aging.

Scan the label: The dermatologists we talked to recommend products that contain the following ingredients:

  • Retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) promote cell turnover, stimulate collagen production, and help to even out skin tone.
  • Peptides are another important anti-aging staple that help to repair skin damage.
  •  Antioxidants. Creams with antioxidants can be beneficial. They help absorb free radicals that can cause damage to your skin.

Antioxidants to look for include vitamin C, vitamin B3, and vitamin E. These vitamins are particularly effective in a cream because they are able to be absorbed into the skin more readily than others.[18]

A free radical is just oxygen that isn’t stable.[19]

As an added bonus, vitamin B3 helps your skin retain moisture.[20]

  • Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, shea butter and other hydrators can boost and lock in moisture, which will help reduce the irritating effects of anti-aging ingredients.

Know your skin type: “For those who have oily skin or live in humid climates, a lightweight cream with mattifying properties will prevent skin from becoming weighed down and shiny,” says Joel Schlessinger, M.D., Omaha-based board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon. “On the other hand, if someone has dehydrated skin or lives in a dry, cold area, a rich cream is more appropriate for their regimen.”

Patch test new products. Before you slather a cream all over your face, it’s best to test it on your skin. Put a small amount on the side of your neck. Leave it on for 24 hours, checking to see if you have a reaction to the cream, such as a rash. If you do, you don’t want to use it on your face.[26]

Factor in sensitivities: If your skin is easily irritated, consider looking for anti-aging creams that contain bakuchiol instead of retinol. “It actually has the same effect as retinol topically, but it’s less irritating because it’s also an anti-inflammatory agent,” says Dr. Ilyas. Other potential irritants to avoid include fragrances, artificial dyes, and even coconut oil or cocoa butter, which can clog pores and cause breakouts.

Don’t be fooled by price. Just because a product is more expensive, that does not mean it’s more effective. Some less-expensive products can have the same or similar ingredients

Look for prime packaging: Ingredients like vitamin C, retinol, and peptides can become unstable and degrade when exposed to air or light, so any products that contain them should be packaged in dark opaque tubes, preferably with air-tight pumps, says Lela Lankerani, D.O., board-certified dermatologist at Westlake Dermatology in Austin, Texas.

But sifting through all of the anti-aging products to find the one that’s best for you can be overwhelming. Here, the creams that recommend most.
